We talked to Polley about how she rewrote the Official xplr rainbow shirt and I love this rules for how a movie should work, her inner conflicts when working with child actors, and what has really changed for her. with female filmmakers in the 5 years since #MeToo. Vogue: I read that Women Talking was introduced to you at a book club meeting. What did you think when you first read it, and what in particular made you want to adapt it? Sarah Polley: I’ve always been a fan of Miriam Toews’ writing and when I read Women Talking, I’m super excited at the idea of people who disagree on such basics coming together and have to admit, grasp. Capture each other’s experiences and find a way forward together. They have to reach a consensus, and that is less and less the case in the world we live in. It gives me an overwhelming sense of optimism. The book also raises such rich and beautiful questions about faith, forgiveness, and social injustice versus individual responsibility. There’s a lot about it that I find really fascinating. I also heard that there is some synchronicity in Frances McDormand contacting her manager about you just as you are contacting her. What were your initial discussions with her like?

So at first, I just wanted to write movies because that’s what I’ve been doing for the Official xplr rainbow shirt and I love this past 10 years, since I had kids. I have three young children now, so the idea of being on set for 17 hours a day just doesn’t feel right to being able to be with them. I said I wanted to direct it too, but that didn’t seem possible to me, and I came up with the idea of changing the regular showtimes so people could see their family or loved ones. . Fran said, “Men have written the rules of the film industry, but this is Women Talking. Let’s rewrite the rules.” The manufacturers committed early on so that we could have civilized working hours and be able to go home and see our children and anyone else we were caring for. It made a huge difference and I’m not sure I could go back to making movies if it weren’t for it.
