Don’t think this uniform is just a birthday outfit. Rihanna will be wearing this on a regular Tuesday. In her youth, South Sudanese model Mary Ukech never dreamed of working in the fashion world. The 23-year-old grew up in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northwestern Kenya, and was first introduced to the idea of walking the runway at her high school, which offers modeling as an extracurricular activity for students. . Ukech told Vogue: “I will always be involved in other activities — but not modeling, because I think that was never the thing for me. “I always thought it was for ‘beautiful people’.” It wasn’t until her senior year, when a classmate suggested she would make a good model, that Ukech started toying with the idea. After being persuaded by her friends, she went on to participate in the school’s catwalk competition – her first time modeling.

It didn’t take long for a company to find Ukech after she graduated from high school. In 2020, Ukech was discovered by her parent company, Skimmer Models Africa, while studying Clinical Child Neuropsychology in Nairobi, Kenya. She decided to take a break from her studies and try modeling. “I told myself I would just try it for a few months and if it didn’t work, I would go back and finish my Official l.s. dunes scorpion shirt and I will buy this studies,” says Ukech. She hasn’t gone back to school since: Ukech’s modeling career quickly began, and she signed with IMG Worldwide last year.
